It's time to curb the cruelty.

Every year, more than 700 million animals are slaughtered in Canada for food. But before that, they travel. They endure grueling journeys, over long distances... and finally to slaughterhouses.

**Update: Your letters make a difference**

Since the 2010 release of Curb the Cruelty the Government of Canada has made some encouraging strides to help farm animals. In October 2010, a few months after we launched the campaign, they announced a plan more than double the fines for those found mistreating or improperly transporting animals. The maximum is now $10,000. This was the first fine increase in over 10 years.

In the spring of 2011, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) stated it would publish information about its enforcement activities and now publishes notices of violations of animal transport regulations, allowing public access to information about how animals are treated in transport.

In March of 2012, the Canadian Government pledged to spend $320,000 on improving the handling and transporting of farm animals. The funds are being used to develop a national drivers’ training and certification program.

Your letters have made an impact but there is still so much to do to improve our animal transport system. Animals are still overcrowded, still not given the rest and food they need and still forced on to trucks despite being ill or injured. There still aren’t enough CFIA inspectors to properly enforce their own regulations.
