Hundreds of thousands of animals die in blood sports every year

The term "blood sports" applies to various kinds of forced combat between animals: bullfighting, bear baiting, cockfighting and dog fighting to name a few. These animals are either bred specifically for fighting or are taken from the wild and trained to fight. For most, it's the only life they've ever known. They suffer and die solely for human entertainment.

Bringing an end to blood sports is just one of the many injustices towards animals we intend to end. It's why we're campaigning for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) at the United Nations. Our hope is, one day, this would be an agreement among people and nations that:

• Animals are sentient and can suffer
• Animals' welfare needs must be respected
• Animal cruelty must end for good

Make it happen. Support our campaign for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), hundreds of other animal protection groups and a network of 2 million animal lovers worldwide are working to put animal welfare on the global political agenda. We are asking governments around the world, including Canada, to support a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) which will then be presented at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
